UPDATE- CHANGE IN MEETING PLACE – UPDATE*************************** We are going to journey to Prince William Forest to experience the Turkey Run Ridge loop trail. We will walk through beautiful woods, along the banks of Quantico Creek and pay particular attention to what our 6 senses are telling us as we go.
Turkey Run Ridge Trail is a 7.3 mile loop trail located near Triangle, Virginia that features beautiful wild flowers and is rated as moderate. There is about an 800 ft elevation gain on the various hills throughout the trail. Dogs on leash are also able to use this trail.
The first and last sections of this hike are through the deciduous woods of the rolling Piedmont terrain, while the middle section follows the bank of the South Branch Quantico Creek as it tumbles over the rocks cutting its way to the Potomac. A watchful eye will detect the presence of beavers in numerous spots along the stream.
We will walk at a moderate pace and plan to stop for lunch and to experience this beautiful trail. Plan on a 4 hour hike (more or less).
NOTES FROM THE TRAIL – I hiked the trail on Sunday – It is really nice – woods and creek. It is a moderate trail, but in the heat it can seem long. Please bring lots of water! I finished 2 quarts before I completed the trail.
To get there, take I-95 south to exit 150B (Triangle-Quantico), with sign for Prince William Forest Park; turn right onto VA 619 and in two blocks turn right onto entrance road for park. THERE IS A $15 FEE FOR VEHICLES UNLESS YOU HAVE A NATIONAL PARK PASS (THIS IS A NATIONAL PARK) so you might want to consider carpooling. Continue on entrance road to intersection and turn left onto the Scenic Drive. Follow signs to Turkey Run. Park in TURKEY RUN ENVIRONMENTAL CENTER PARKING LOT. I’ll have a blue pack and a big grin on my face.
Please bring plenty of water and bug spray for the hike, something for your lunch and snacks.
Enter park and drive straight until you see Scenic Drive. Turn left. Follow sign to Turkey Run until you get to Turkey Run Dr & turn Right. Park in TURKEY RUN ENVIRONMENTAL CENTER PARKING LOT. I’ll have a blue pack and a big grin on my face.
Meet at 9:00 (or before) and plan to complete the hike by 1:00.
If you get there a little early you can get a trail map at the Visitors Center
