We’ll do a moderate 5 mile out and back hike from Skyline Drive down to Hazel River Falls and Cave.
Elevation change is about 900 feet. The trail is mostly easy except for the last .2 miles, which is a very steep set of stone steps. The struggle is worth it, though, as the steps lead to a hidden world of cliffs, boulders, river, and falling water. We’ll have our lunch there.
Please remember to bring lunch and at least 2 liters of water. It’s always a good idea to tuck away a couple of snacks where you can reach them while hiking to keep your energy level steady. Wear hiking shoes or sturdy sneakers.
The hike begins at 2850 ft. That means it will likely be 6-8 degrees cooler than our temperatures here in Loudoun County. Bring one more layer than you think you’ll need. That could be a super lightweight rain suit, regardless of the forecast – a rain suit blocks the wind and holds in your body heat.
I’m sorry to say that because of the steep and rocky descent and the rocky edges at the bottom, this is not a dog friendly hike.
Please have a mask and hand sanitizer handy, and plan to keep distancing in mind even though we will be outside.
