We’ll hike to Big Devils Stairs in Shenandoah National Park. This hike is pleasant and generally not too demanding, and we won’t be in a hurry. In the last half mile before we reach the gorge and overlooks, we’ll descend through an especially lovely landscape of mountain laurel, hemlock, pines, and rocks and boulders.
Close to the gorge, the trail becomes steep in places, requiring attention to your footing, and you may find walking sticks handy.
The gorge and valley overlooks are dramatic yet peaceful and feel far removed from the bustle of the park. We’ll have lunch there and admire the view. Then we’ll go into silence for twenty minutes or so on the cliffs and continue that silence into the first half mile of our return trip.
Pack adequate snacks, water, and extra layers, including rain gear, so that nothing interferes with your comfort and enjoyment of the day. Insulated sitting pads will be provided at the trailhead.
Afterwards, there is an option to go to Spelunker’s http://www.spelunkerscustard.com/ , a burger/custard fast food restaurant in Front Royal.
