We’ll hike to Big Devils Stairs in Shenandoah National Park. This is a 5.5 mile out and back hike, pleasant and generally not too demanding, and we won’t be in a hurry. The bulk of the trail skirts around the side of the mountain; with the leaves off the trees, we should have good views throughout the hike. In the last half mile before we reach the gorge and overlooks, we’ll pass through an especially lovely landscape of mountain laurel, hemlock, pines, and rocks and boulders. Close to the gorge, the trail becomes steep in places, requiring attention to your footing, and you may find walking sticks handy.
The gorge and valley overlooks are dramatic yet peaceful and feel far removed from the bustle of the park.
Pack adequate snacks, water, and extra layers, including rain gear, so that nothing interferes with your comfort and enjoyment of the day. Insulated sitting pads will be provided at the trailhead.
Afterwards, there is an option to go to Spelunker’s http://www.spelunkerscustard.com/, a burger/custard fast food restaurant in Front Royal.

Looking forward to sharing this beautiful place with you.
