Join us for a hike on one of the original sections of the PHT from Roosevelt Island to Turkey Run Park.  Along with the Mt Vernon trail, It is one of the two original segments of the PHNST in Virginia.  It is maintained by volunteers from the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club. The trail is on National Park Service land.  It passes the Civil War fortress of Ft. Marcy. It features fine views of the river and Georgetown.

RSVP INFO:

I limit the RSVPs to these events to 15 with a wait list. Since this event is posted to both the Imagine & “Lets Take a Hike…” meetup groups, I spread the available openings across both meetup groups. If this meetup is already wait listed, click ***THIS LINK***  to check the other meetup because it still might have some openings.

***IMPORTANT*** Please be certain you plan on attending before you RSVP. If you RSVP and your plans change… no worries. Just be sure to update your status so someone else on the wait list can jump in if they want. Your cooperation is appreciated.

The plan is to meet in parking area “C-2” at Turkey Run Park(see map link below) and run shuttle to our starting point just across from Roosevelt Island. We will need to retrieve vehicles at the end of the hike.

BACKPACK TRAINING(optional):

If you’re new to backpacking (or have never been) and you want to attend one of the multi-day trips along the AT I plan on doing in 2017, this is a great opportunity to see if you’re up for the challenge. This is also a great way to try out a new backpack before you head to the wilderness.

Feel free to borrow or rent a backpack and fill it with water bottles or something else to get your weight up to 25-30 lbs (no cheating). In fact, since the AT is pretty hilly, I recommend that you build up to carrying as much weight in your pack as you can comfortably handle during these training hikes. Getting used to carrying an extra 20 lbs during these training hikes will go a long way to improving your level of physical comfort on a real trip.

If you want to go ahead and purchase gear, feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions.

HIKE INFO:

DIFFICULTY: Beginner+ (Intermediate if your carrying a backpack)

LENGTH: About 8 miles

ELEVATION GAIN: A few ups and downs to avoid cliffs but nothing of consequence.

DURATION: Approximately 4.5 hours.
