Those who wander are not always lost, especially when wandering in community. Please join us.

We’ll meet at the Lost Mountain parking area in Sky Meadows State Park. The hike will be a figure eight with the Rolling Meadows trail forming the lower loop and the Washington’s Ridge and Lost Mountain trails forming the upper loop.

Rolling Meadows is a wide, mowed path with two stream crossings. We’ll take the south side of the loop on the way up, wandering through open meadows, climbing moderately but steadily to the junction with the Washington’s Ridge and Lost Mountain trails. We’ll take a few minutes at the junction to enjoy the panoramic view of meadows and surrounding mountains.

The upper trails, which are forested, call for a ‘difficult’ rating due to some genuinely steep but relatively short ascents and descents, which in some cases are also rocky and deeply covered with fallen leaves. A hiking pole is handy for these sections. At this time of year, there are continuing views of the mountain ridge to the west.

We’ll return via the north side of the Rolling Meadows loop. Once down on somewhat level ground and after our second creek crossing, we’ll take a few minutes to slow to an amble and savor the meadows in silence.

Distance: 5.3 miles

Rating: Difficult

Meeting Date and Time: Sunday, Feb. 18, 2018 at 9:30 am

Meeting Location: Lost Mountain parking lot, Sky Meadows State Park. https://goo.gl/maps/ArH4iNEwGPM2

Parking: We’re getting an early start due to very limited parking at the Lost Mountain parking area (9 or 10 personal vehicles). There is additional limited parking ½ mile away at Turner Pond (6-8 cars and a 15 car overflow lot if the ground is not too wet). Please carpool if possible.

The upside of the limited parking is that there are many fewer people on this side of the park.

Cost: The park entrance fee is $5/car at a self-serve kiosk. You’ll need cash or check.
