The weather in the long range forecast looks perfect for a late afternoon hike this Sunday! We will enjoy the beauty of the summertime plants and flowers and the Mountain Laurel in full bloom as we repeat the hike we took in April to enjoy the beauty of the AT in June. The various shades of green and wildflowers are extraordinary in this season of the year.
We will meet up for a hike to Bear’s Den Overlook and on to the Tributary Bridge for a 3.5 mile round trip hike. This hike has moderate inclines and rocky areas along the path that intersects the AT. Please dress comfortably with appropriate shoes and bring your own bug spray.
DO NOT USE YOUR GPS – Take Rt. 7 to the flashing intersection sign to turn on Rt. 601 (Blueridge Mountain Road). You will take an immediate right to park in the VDOT commuter lot where our group will gather.
We will connect to the Appalachian Trail and hike to the Bear’s Den overlook to enjoy the view. We will then continue down the AT to a lovely, small creek where we will sit quietly for a period of time to observe the summertime wildflowers and wildlife. We will be back in the commuter lot by 4:30 pm.
There will be an option of gathering at Twin Oaks Winery after the hike. It is located just across Rt. 7 http://www.twinoakstavernwinery.com/ about 3 minutes from the commuter parking lot. The Winery closes at 6 pm.
Cathy Norman will guide the hike. Cathy loves hiking and the outdoors and lives on Blueridge Mountain Road. She is a Virginia Master Naturalist, Hatha Yoga and Mindfulness Meditation instructor.
