Join us for a day hike in Shenandoah National Park to Mary’s Rock, with its spectacular 270 degree view to enjoy the fall foliage. On the way up the Buck Hollow Trail, we’ll pass some excellent examples of trail construction probably from the CCC days as we cross a trail side stream several times. Before we reach the AT on our way to Mary’s Rock, we’ll pass the ruins of an old home stead. On our return, The Buck Ridge Trail features hundreds of log and stone steps built into the last half mile which is very steep and rocky. A real marvel when you’re actually hiking down them.

Spiritually, a person’s connection with nature is very important to me as I hope it is with everyone attending this event. To help facilitate this connection, I limit the RSVPs to these events to 15 with a wait list. Since this event is posted to both the Imagine & “Lets Take a Hike…” meetup groups, I spread the available openings across both meetup groups. If this meetup is already wait listed, check the other meetup because it still might have some openings.

Please be certain you plan on attending before you RSVP. ***IMPORTANT*** If you RSVP and your plans change, please be sure to update your status so someone else on the wait list can jump in if they want. Your cooperation is appreciated. If you missed out on this particular event, no worries. I tend to run the same events multiple times throughout the year. I’d rather do the same walk 2 or 3 times with just 12 folks each time then do it once with 36.

DIFFICULTY: Intermediate+. While the pace won’t be particularly fast, please have experience with hikes of similar difficulty (length & elevation gain).

LENGTH: 9 miles

DURATION: Approximately 5 hours and 30 minutes.

ROUTE DESCRIPTION: We’ll be hiking up the Buck Hollow trail and continuing on the AT for a short distance to Mary’s Rock. We’ll retrace our steps on the AT then descend down the Buck Ridge trail to arrive back at the starting point.

Be sure to bring plenty of water, snacks and bug spray.

We depart the Buck Ridge trail head at: 8:30 am

Carpooling is highly encouraged since the trail head parking area is not that big. There will be a carpool leaving at 7:00 am from…

Wegmans Parking Lot (east corner of the lot)
45131 Columbia Place
Sterling, VA 20166

I’ll be at Wegmans but a suggested second car pool would depart 7:00 am from the Food Lion Parking Lot – King St, Leesburg .

Afterwards, for those that care to, a visit to

Head Masters Pub in Sperryville

is planned.

Currently, he works as a Sr. Park Ranger for NOVAParks at Algonkian Regional Park. In addition to his day to day duties, he runs all of the parks guided kayak tours and also started the Algonkian Nature Preserve which is a long term labor of love of his.
