SUMMARY: Maryland’s Sugarloaf Mountain, the area’s best known example of a monadnock, features a network of zigzagging trails. The Northern Peaks Trail provides the adventure of rocky climbs to three nearby summits, plus a short detour to White Rocks, a fantastic set of viewpoints overlooking Frederick Valley to the west. The hike is a little over 6 miles with about 1100 feet of elevation.

HIKE DETAILS: ***NOTE CHANGE***We will start the hike promptly at 9:30, from the far end of the East View Parking Area (directions below). Please plan on getting their early- the parking lot can fill up. White Rocks via Northern Peaks Loop is a 6.3 mile moderately trafficked loop trail located near Dickerson, Maryland that offers the chance to see wildlife and is rated as moderate.
We will take our time and enjoy and admire nature. We will discover how hiking with others in nature can enhance health and help reduce stress in mind, body and soul in ways that will prepare us to live everyday life in more wholehearted way. For a full description to the trail see:

MEETING PLACE : ***NOTE CHANGE***I-270 to the Hyattstown exit, follow Route 109 to Comus, then right on Comus Road to the Sugarloaf Mountain entrance. To reach the start, wind your way up Sugarloaf Mountain Drive, TO THE FAR END OF EAST VIEW parking area. If you can’t park in the East View lot, you can try the West View lot and hike back (about 1/2 mile) to the East View lot.

COST: Stronghold (the owner of Sugarloaf) requests at least a $5.00 donation.

WHAT TO BRING: Wear sturdy trail shoes. Bring plenty of water – much more than you think you will need – The rule of thumb is 1 litter for every 2 hours. Bring something for lunch, and snacks. Dress for the weather.
You may wish to bring hiking poles.
